The leak is then detected by a sensor that sends out a laser beam pulse and measures the time delay between when it is emitted and when it reflects back from the pipeline. If there is a change in the reflection (vibrations from the substance leaking through the pipe), then the leak is detected and an alarm notification is generated.

This method has a high sensitivity to leaks during steady-state and transient conditions, and false alarms are avoided with statistical methods. However, it may not be suitable to detect an ongoing leak after the initial event.

Pipeline flyovers are frequently carried out to identify small releases that cannot be located by other methods, and may be used to quickly confirm a release location before deploying additional leak-detection equipment. They are not typically recommended as a primary leak-detection method and should be reserved for special situations.
